It was unheard of at the time. And we haven’t seen it since. In 1964, The Beatles’ arrival on American soil immediately transformed audiences across the Atlantic into Beatlemania. This love at first sight between the quartet and the public has never waned, contributing to one of the English group’s most popular hits of all time.
In 1964, the Beatles’ first appearance on American television on The Ed Sullivan Show attracted no fewer than 73 million viewers. To date, it is the 29th highest audience in the United States, and the broadcast of this show is considered by experts to be a turning point in the history of music.
Today it is simply impossible to have never heard of The Beatles or heard any of their songs. On the other hand, the band’s history may not be familiar to younger audiences.
Never-before-seen pictures of the Beatles to be released!
In this way, the documentary Beatles ’64 gives us the opportunity to (re)discover the conquest of American territory by the Fab Boys (among their many nicknames). The success was so unexpected that it took the band members by surprise, going overnight from the ranks of celebrities in their country of origin to international superstars.
Directed by David Tedeschi, the documentary is produced by Martin Scorsese, as well as the last two living Beatles (Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr) and the rights holders of John Lennon and George Harrison.
Archive images, some previously unreleased, were remastered by Peter Jackson’s New Zealand studio WingNut Films. The latter recently dedicated a three-part documentary film dedicated to the Beatles and more specifically to the recording of their last album, Get Back.
The Beatles ’64 documentary is now available exclusively on Disney+.
