Action stars and rivalries? Between Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, we know that the rivalry started in the late 70s and lasted about 10 years. And yet, with another up-and-coming actor vying for the same roles as them, namely Bruce Willis, they joined forces in the ’90s before appearing on the big screen together in 2010’s Expendables to launch Planet Hollywood, a restaurant chain. Other celebrities like Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Wesley Snipes and Danny Glover and Ringo Starr. But Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Willis were the faces of the organization and the ones who gave the channel real influence in its early days in show business.
And it was in this context that the three stars sat down for a 1991 Gems interview where they discussed their “non-existent” rivalry, spoke passionately and lightly about their action film careers and opening their horizons at times apart. A genre to consider for comedy, for example. But above all to the question of whether they had a career plan: the answer was no for Schwarzenegger, yes for Stallone. Willis then?
“I had a plan, I had to redo it“, he said, before fully expressing his opinion on the action movie genre. “What you have to understand is that the action movies that we make, what we call action movies, are just modern westerns. You know, good guys and bad guys. 40 years ago we didn’t do them with horses anymore. It’s the same thing, we just don’t ride horses“, he concluded.
Despite their celebrity status and individual success, the trio have not yet starred in any films expendable in 2010. You know the rest.
