1955. Harry Angell is a private detective. A man calling himself Louis Kiefer hires him to find Johnny Favorit. His investigation has barely begun when all the people he contacts who knew Johnny are murdered under mysterious circumstances. As he learns more about himself and his client, Harry finds himself fighting for his own survival…
Adapted from the novel Saturday in Central Park By William Hurtsberg and published in 1978, Alan Parker’s Angel’s Heart has the intelligence to greatly reposition the novel’s plot by setting it in a sweaty Louisiana suburb.
A sensational mix of thriller and horror, ultimately quite rare, with Mickey Rourke at the top as he angrily wades through the nauseating swamps of his subconscious before his investigation, the film will unfortunately be a dismal failure at the box office. office. A completely unjustified sanction, which time will fortunately correct to raise this piece of crap to the status of a cult work.
I know who I am!!!!!!!
The ending of Angel’s Heart is complex and entirely symbolic; Where the terrifying epilogue of the search for identity, the inevitable and tragic fate and the inevitable disastrous consequences when a man makes a pact with evil incarnate are mixed.
Therefore, Harry Angel leads the investigation, during which the corpses keep piling up: all the witnesses he meets and who are involved in his case, find themselves killed.
In the end, Harry Angel discovers that he is none other than the man he is looking for, Johnny Favourite. The latter, who was also a great voodoo sorcerer, sold his soul to the devil for fame and fortune represented by Louis Kifre… Lucifer.
But when the devil demanded his immortal soul after this Faustian pact, Johnny the Favorite tried to escape from him. In 1943, the Favorite kidnapped a young soldier and performed a satanic ritual on the boy, killing him and eating his still-exploding heart in order to hide from the Devil by switching his identity.
At Margaret Krusemark’s (Charlotte Rampling) home, Harry discovers a famous soldier’s ID badge hidden in a small vase: it’s his, Harold Angel. Louis Kifre then appears and Harry realizes that he is none other than Lucifer himself.
Harry pathetically tries to deny his responsibility for the murders during his investigation, but Louis Cypher quickly confronts him about his macabre record. “No one will kill me! I know who I am!” – “I’m afraid they were all killed by your hands. under my leadership, of course” let the devil go “For 12 years you’ve been living on borrowed time and other people’s memories.” and add: “Flesh is weak, John. Only the spirit is immortal. And yours is mine!”

Enraged, Harry returns to his hotel room, where the police discover the body of Epiphany Proudfoot, raped and horribly mutilated, with Harry’s soldier dog tag that the devil placed on him. When Harry tells the police that Epiphany is actually his daughter, one of them yells at him. “You will burn for this”. To which Harry replies: “I know, to hell”.
During the end credits, an angel is seen standing inside a freight elevator-like elevator that descends endlessly. An image that clearly indicates his descent into hell. As the screen fades to black, Cypher can be heard whispering “Harry” and “John”, claiming to possess two shared souls.
A shocking ending to a great movie that we will never tire of watching.
