The Russian minister praised Budapest’s diplomatic efforts
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó is on an official visit to Moscow, where he met his Russian counterpart Serghei Lavrov and spoke about the war in Ukraine.
The Hungarian chancellor, through a message on social media, warned that the conflict in Kiev “cannot be resolved on the battlefield”, but rather “at the negotiating table”.
“We will maintain dialogue because it is the only path to the success of the peacekeeping mission,” he wrote.
Lavrov, for his part, stressed that the diplomatic efforts of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán are “an example”. He also stressed that Moscow is willing to consider negotiating initiatives on the conflict in Kiev motivated by a sincere desire to achieve peace.
“There are several initiatives promoted by different countries on different continents, dictated by a sincere desire to bring peace. And Prime Minister Orbán’s recent peace itinerary is an example of these initiatives, as well as others, including the Chinese-Brazilian ones , south-eastern African and Arab countries We are ready to take them all into consideration,” the Russian said.
Lavrov also made it clear that Moscow does not intend to accept a ceasefire that will only serve to allow Ukraine’s Western allies to send in new advanced weapons.
Since Hungary took over the rotating presidency of the European Union last July, Orbán has traveled to Kiev and Moscow, where he met with presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin. .
