The UK Revenue pointed out irregularities in Grint’s tax return
Rupert Grintknown for playing Ron Weasley in Harry Pottermust pay 1.8 million pounds — around R$14 million — to UK Revenue and Customs after losing a legal battle (via NME).
The amount was determined in 2019, when the IRS investigated and challenged one of the actor’s tax returns.
Supported by lawyers, Grint filed an appeal, claiming that the money received from a certain company was properly taxed as a capital asset. The IRS claims, however, that the amount should have been taxed as income and, therefore, at a higher rate.
In fiscal year 2011-2012, Grint he received £4.5 million from a company that managed his affairs and in which he was the sole shareholder. This payment was justified as “probably residual income and bonuses” from the films Harry Potter.
The judge responsible for the case rejected the appeal Grintwho will now have to pay £1.8 million. The tax on capital assets was 10%. Income tax has a maximum rate of 52%.
For the judge Harriet Morganthe money “derived substantially all of the value of Mr. Grint“, and must therefore be declared as income.
