Life and career of Sam Rivers
Samuel Robert Rivers, better known in the music world as Sam Rivers, was born on September 2, 1977, in Jacksonville, Florida, in the United States.
His relationship with art began early in his childhood: he learned to play the tuba, but became interested in the guitar as a teenager — until, at the suggestion of a teacher, he adopted the bass, an instrument that would define his career, in which he also joined the group Sleepkillers and acted as a producer, collaborating on albums by bands such as Burn Season and The Embraced.
During his youth, Rivers met Fred Durst, lead singer and frontman of Limp Bizkit, while they both worked at a fast food chain in a Jacksonville mall. The partnership resulted in the creation of the band Malachi Sage, the embryo of what would later become the iconic nu metal band, with the arrival of drummer John Otto. DJ Lethal and guitarist Wes Borland would complete the lineup at another time.
As a bassist, Sam was featured on all six of Limp Bizkit’s studio albums. On Results May Vary (2003), he recorded guitar parts during the period in which Borland was out of the group’s formation. In 2015, his temporary departure from the band was announced due to an alleged back problem. It was later revealed that Rivers was suffering from liver disease caused by excessive alcohol consumption — a condition that led him to undergo a liver transplant.
