The Dutch driver will precede Lando Norris, 2nd overall, but will only be able to benefit from the 5th position of the leader Oscar Piastri
In the fight to touch the pilots of McLarenthe four-time champion Max Verstappenfrom the Red Bullhe didn’t hide his apprehension during this Saturday’s qualifying for the United States GP Formula 1when he lost his last fastest lap and saw several rivals fighting for the top. “Luckily it didn’t make any difference.”
The third-placed driver in the World Drivers’ Championship will be ahead of Lando Norris, second overall, but will only be able to benefit from the fifth place on the grid occupied by leader Oscar Piastri.
In addition to the concern for the rival team, Verstappen revealed that the wind could be an additional opponent. “The wind increased today (Saturday) compared to yesterday (Friday), and it managed to change a bit, so there was a strong tailwind on all axles, which lost downforce,” Verstappen explained. “The car moves a lot more, even compared to yesterday, which made everything a little more difficult.”
According to the Dutchman this could be advantageous in some parts of the track and dangerous in others. “Sure, in some corners you gain some lap time, but you can’t put in as much effort as you normally would in the first sector,” he complained.
