After dominating from start to finish, the Australian won on home soil. David Alonso and Diogo complete the podium and the Brazilian is getting ever closer to the title
At the end of Saturday evening (18th), the Moto2 race of the Australian Grand Prix was won by the Australian Senna Agius, followed by David Alonso and the Brazilian Diogo Moreira.
The course of the race
Diogo Moreira started from first position after taking pole position. The Brazilian started well, as did Senna Agius, who moved into first position already at the first corner. Behind Diogo was Manu González, championship leader, trying to overtake the Brazilian and increase his lead.
On lap three, Senna Agius opened up too much at the third corner, temporarily losing the lead to Diogo. Manu González took advantage of the opportunity and tried to overtake twice, but Agius was faster and regained the position. Diogo was overtaken by González and David Alonso, who was immediately behind.
On the fifth lap Sasaki overtakes Moreira, but the Brazilian responds shortly afterwards to regain the position. The result was not good for Diogo, who saw the title slip away a little and the championship scenario become increasingly difficult. On lap eight David Alonso overtakes Gonzalez and takes second place. A few corners later, Moreira also overtook the Spaniard, returning to the podium, with third place.
Diogo continued to search for second place, attempting to overtake Alonso. On the tenth lap the Colombian makes a mistake that costs him two positions, with Moreira and González managing to overtake. Two laps later, Manu managed to overtake Moreira on the final straight. The battle for second place was fierce and the Brazilian managed to overtake on the following lap, regaining second position.
With eleven laps to go Moreira and González closed sectors with similar pace, with little difference between them and on the following lap Manu managed to regain second place. While the leader and vice leader of the championship fought corner after corner, Senna Agius ran in the lead, without worries. The Australian managed to have more than 4.5 seconds ahead of the others.
On lap eighteen Alonso overtakes González. The competitiveness continued until the end, with Alonso overtaking Moreira at the same time as Dixon overtaking Manu. The Spaniard was overtaken at the next corner by Dani Holgado.
In the final corners Diogo tried to overtake Alonso, closing in on the Colombian in every sector. Finishing third, the Brazilian remains in second place but reduces González’s lead from 9 to 2 points.
