“A Different Man” wins the 2024 Gotham Awards

“Sing Sing” dominates the acting categories at the independent film awards held in New York

The film wins awards before the Oscar

The feature film “A Different Man”, by A24, won the award for Best Film at the 2024 Gotham Awards, an American independent film awards held this Monday (2/12) at Cipriani Wall Street, in New York.

Director Aaron Schimberg’s film presents Sebastian Stan (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) unrecognizable as a deformed man. In the plot he plays Edward, an aspiring actor suffering from neurofibromatosis. The film portrays his transformation after facial reconstruction surgery, taking him on a journey of obsession and self-discovery. Stan won the Best Actor award at the Berlin Film Festival for his performance in the film.

At first, Edward begins to receive compliments on his new appearance. However, after meeting Oswald (Adam Pearson, from “Under the Skin”), who plays him in a comedy, Edward becomes obsessed with him, since Oswald looks exactly like he did before the surgery and that’s why he is more successful. Adam Pearson doesn’t wear makeup in the film because he suffers from neurofibromatosis.

Another strong point

In addition to “A Different Man,” “Sing Sing” also shone at the awards, standing out in the acting categories, with Colman Domingo awarded Best Lead Performance and Clarence Maclin receiving the trophy for Best Supporting Performance. The drama tells the story of a wrongly convicted man, who finds new purpose when he joins a theater group inside Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison. The production is based on the real-life program “Rehabilitation Through the Arts”, which promotes the rehabilitation of prisoners through the performing arts.

The two films are unreleased in Brazil. While “A Different Man” will be released next week, on December 12, “Sing Sing” will only be released in Brazilian cinemas on February 13.
