We’ll have to wait until December 26 to finally discover the Squid Game season 2 that Netflix subscribers have been waiting three years for. Many observers are already wondering if the South Korean series will be able to confirm the huge success experienced by the first season. But everything seems to point to new success for the program.
Since October 31st, when the Season 2 teaser was released, the series has seen a 60% increase in viewership on Netflix. This new craze allowed Squid Game to break new audience records, surpassing 330 million users and 2.8 billion hours.
A second season was not planned
Launching on the platform in late 2021, Squid Game was a surprise success, becoming Netflix’s most-watched series of all time within weeks. The series features bloody events inspired by childhood games. Season 1 ended with an open ending as we saw the sole survivor hunt down his tormentors.
However, Squid Game was originally conceived as a short story. The program, which was created as a movie, then a nine-episode mini-series, was therefore not supposed to be the subject of additional seasons. But the incredible success of the Squid Game left its creator Hwang Dong-hyuk with no choice.
Little is known about Season 2, other than that it will be a direct sequel. We will find several characters from the first season, namely the main character Seon Gi-hoon, played by Lee Jung-jae. Supporting characters such as the masked man (Lee Byung-hoon) or the employer (Gong Yoo) will also return.
You can watch the first season of Squid Game now on Netflix.
