Hollywood’s ‘extraordinary cowardice’ ‘limits’ cinema, says Sean Penn

For the Hollywood actor and director, most of the films that go to the Oscars are of no interest, with the exception of The Florida Project or I’m Still Here

Actor known for films such as A Lesson in Love (2001), About Boys and Wolves (2003), Daddy (2023) and Student Picardies (1982), Sean Penn harshly criticized the Hollywoodwhose “extraordinary cowardice” even “limits” the potential of cinema.

In participation in the Marrakech Film Festivalwhere he received the Lifetime Achievement Award, Penn spoke about the current state of the industry. “THE Academy [de Artes e Ciências Cinematográficas] has exercised truly extraordinary cowardice when it comes to being part of the larger world of expression and, in fact, has been largely responsible for limiting the imagination and greatly limiting different cultural expressions,” he stated (via Variety).

So I don’t get too excited about what we call Oscar [exceto] when a movie like Florida Project (2017), or I’m Still Here (2024) [são indicados]or, you know, Emilia Pérez (2024), of the things that are likely to happen this year.

Right away, Penn added how the industry is “afraid” to tackle controversial political topics, referencing the recent biopic of donald trumptitled The Apprenticewhich should be left out of the next awards season.

“It’s jaw-dropping how scared this rebel thing is of a big movie like this, one with great, great acting. [É incrível] that they too can be as afraid as a small, insignificant Republican congressman,” he said.

“All over the world [] this demand for diversity – but not diversity of behavior and not diversity of opinion or language. I would just encourage everyone to be as politically incorrect as their heart desires and to engage with diversity and to keep telling these stories,” he continued Sean Penn.
