The statement was made during breakfast with journalists. The PF has indicted Marcel Van The director general of the Federal Police, delegate Andrei Rodrigues, reacted, on Wednesday 4th, to the criticisms of the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), who opposes the investigations opened to investigate alleged crimes committed by deputies who criticized the actions of the police force. During a breakfast with journalists, Rodrigues said Lira’s complaints would not hinder the PF’s investigations.
Lira protested against the indictments of deputies Marcel Van Hattem (NOVO-RS) and Cabo Gilberto Silva (PL-PB). “Zero disruption. We will not deviate one millimeter from what guides us, which is the Constitution and the laws. This is what guides all our investigations and gives us the ability to respond to the criminal justice system,” Rodrigues said.
Marcel Van Hattem accused PF delegate Fábio Alvarez Shor of abusing his authority and falsifying reports. Shor works in investigations involving former president Jair Bolsonaro, such as the one on the attempted coup at the end of 2022. “Do you know what all these people (under investigation) have in common? All those persecuted by the PF? They all spread the photo of a another abuser of the PF’s authority, Fábio Alvarez Shor,” Van Hattem said in the House plenary in August. “I am not afraid to speak openly and I repeat it. I want people to know that it is this so-called police officer, who has made several absolutely fraudulent reports against innocent people,” the Rio Grande do Sul lawmaker said.
At the end of November, the President of the Chamber opposed the indictment of the deputies due to their interventions in Parliament. “The fundamental right to debate and criticism in the gallery cannot be limited through threats of judicial or police persecution. Parliament is not and cannot be the target of external interference that hinders the free exercise of its mandate”, stated Lira .
“I have a deep respect for Parliament, I have been there a few times, I spoke with President Arthur Lira, with President Rodrigo Pacheco. But we must clearly distinguish what freedom of expression is, which is the prerogative of the parliamentarian with respect to his speech , to their opinions, that they committed a crime,” Andrei Rodrigues said Wednesday morning.
For the director of the PF, parliamentary immunity is not an “absolute right”. According to him, the Constitution protects the right to honor. “Can you imagine someone going up to the gallery of the House and starting to advertise the sale of cocaine, the sale of marijuana (…). Is this acceptable? Is this reasonable? Is this freedom of expression?”, asked Andrei Rodrigues.
In the conversation with journalists, Andrei Rodrigues also spoke about the progress of the investigation into the attempted coup at the end of 2022; and detailed the company’s plans for 2025. According to him, the Federal Police has already carried out new searches and seizures to try to clarify other aspects of the coup plan and must carry out new witness statements as ordered by President Jair Bolsonaro.
