Since entering Un si grand soleil, Catherine Laumier (Smadi Wolfman) has established herself as a powerful and intimidating figure.
Manipulative, ambitious and power-hungry, Catherine proves to be a worthy adversary to the inflexible Élisabeth Bastide (Christel Labaud). But behind that unassuming facade, Catherine recently revealed a deep insecurity following her husband’s death. This mixture of coldness and human frailty makes him such a complex and fascinating character that we enjoy discovering from episode to episode.
But what are the writers of Un si grand soleil preparing for Catherine’s character?
Smadi Wolfmann, the interpreter of the formidable Catherine Laumier, spoke to Allocine about what lies ahead for her character during the next episodes of Un si grand soleil. And suffice it to say, life is far from easy when your name is Laumiere.
Allociné: Going back to the beginning of the adventure Un si grand soleil, what attracted you to the role of Catherine Laumier?
Smaddy Wolfman : I didn’t know what to expect. All I knew was that I had to fool Jeremy Covillo and Christel Labeau. I told myself “Wow, that’s cool“.
Then I imagined Catherine. It was indeed thickened by the transfer of power from the first arch to Catherine and Francis. I told myself that it would be difficult because I really had to live with this father who was going to be killed. It was a little bit of pressure, but it was really nice to play with Jeremy and create this family. Even if he’s not there anymore, he’s still out there somewhere because he really created the Tony Laumiere family.
Over the course of the episodes, Catherine emerged as Elizabeth’s rival. Do you like being the villain of the series?
It’s so fun to be a villain, and having a partner like Christel Laboddy is really exciting. It sets the bar very high. When I see the reaction of people on the street and they say: “MeI hate you!“, I tell myself that this is good. I’m going to do this because it’s so fun.
I also really like that Catherine isn’t evil for the sake of being evil. He always has a good reason. Family is an extremely important value, something rooted in it. There is a lot of love in Ekaterine and I am also interested in this character. Through it I can really go deep. It’s a real gift.
Catherine entered the series as a strong woman with a lot of character. After the death of François, we were able to discover a more fragile and human side of your character. Do you like taking Catherine in this new direction?
Since I didn’t have much information about the character at first, I built the whole story, the family dynasty, the rivalry between Catherine’s father and Elizabeth’s father. I really dug it. And I actually love it, because the more intrigue builds, the more I find justification for my story.
What was Catherine’s state of mind after returning from the hospital?
He is even more hungry for life, to take control, to rule and to eat everything. He really wants to take his place, especially since he feels that he has wasted his time in this nursing home. He is even more eager to get his property back. This will also happen with Elizabeth, who will play a dirty trick on him.
So the tension between Catherine and Elizabeth isn’t ready to end?
Not going to stop, no.
What can we expect between Catherine, Boris and Lorin?
The roles will evolve and change slightly. Ekaterine and Lorin become close, and Boris, who was a mother’s boy, will have to prove himself. Things will not necessarily go well between them. Ekaterina will believe until the end that her son betrayed her.
On the heart side, could Catherine find love again in the upcoming episodes?
Nothing is planned on that front at this point.
