The works were started by the Italian Embassy in Brasilia
BRASÍLIA, 06 DEC – The Embassy of Italy in Brasilia launched this Thursday evening (5) a book and a documentary that highlight the profound and lasting impact of 150 years of Italian immigration in Brazil.
With stories that represent the past and present of the Italian-Brazilian community, the two materials will be distributed on television channels and in educational institutions to strengthen ties between the two countries.
“They are two extraordinary works: a beautiful book and a beautiful documentary. Both tell a profound and shared story between our two countries, the history of immigration”, stated the Italian ambassador to Brasilia, Alessandro Cortese, underlining the “significant “Contribution of Italians to the “greatness” of Brazil.
The book offers a story with historical content, including photos of the time and original texts by the authors Claudia Fonseca, Adriana Marcolini and Marilúcia Bottallo, as well as a selection of artistic photographs signed by the well-known photographer Paulo Vitale.
The two parts of the work portray everything from the crossings of the first immigrants to the social, cultural and economic contributions that consolidated the Italian presence in Brazil.
The documentary, in turn, brings a modern and sensitive audiovisual approach to the topic of Italian immigration. The production, lasting 52 minutes and available on the Embassy’s YouTube channel, delves into the impact of Italian culture on contemporary Brazilian society, through interviews with leading personalities from the artistic, political, cultural and economic panorama.
The project was created by Editora e Produtora Brasileira of São Paulo, under the general direction of Pedro Saad, with the patronage of the “Italia per São Paulo” association, thanks to its president, Sandra Papaiz, and vice-president, Graziano Messana, as well as other important exponents of the Italian-Brazilian community, such as Sergio Comolatti, Massimo Bauducco and Fundação Itaú.
During his launch speech, Cortese also took stock of the events that marked the “unforgettable” year of 2024 for bilateral relations. “In addition to the celebrations of this important anniversary, we highlight the historic visit of the president [Sergio] Mattarella, and the simultaneous presidencies of the G7, by Italy, and the G20, by Brazil, which promoted a political exchange of the highest level. It’s been a really special year,” he added.
The event concluded the celebrations for the 150 years of Italian immigration to Brazil, but the anniversary will continue to be celebrated in 2025 in Rio Grande do Sul.
