Menstrual fatigue can be a symptom of everything from hormonal problems to poor nutrition.

Along with bad mood, bloating and headaches, menstrual tiredness It is one of the symptoms that accompany menstruation. The problem is characterized by a feeling of physical exhaustion that can interrupt the routine and performance of daily activities.




Gynecologist Patrick Bellelis, a collaborator in the endometriosis sector at the Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo, explains that excessive tiredness is common and occurs for a variety of reasons related to the body. According to him, some causes of menstrual fatigue are not controllable, but others can be avoided or alleviated.

“Our body tends to react to the way we treat it. If we don’t take the necessary vitamins and give it adequate rest, it will complain. A nutrient-rich diet is recommended for anyone throughout the month, but for women it is even more importantly, especially during menstruation,” says the doctor.

Below, the specialist explains the main reasons that lead to menstrual fatigue:

Low estrogen levels

During this period there is a decrease in estrogen, the female sex hormone. This change causes some of the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, or premenstrual tension, premenstrual syndrome. Symptoms may last until levels start to rise again, towards the end of your period.

Heavy bleeding

Heavier uterine bleeding can also cause fatigue. Its causes can be fibroids, polyps or hormonal imbalance. The latter can lead to overdevelopment of the endometrium (tissue that lines the uterus and sheds during menstruation), resulting in heavier menstrual bleeding.

Anemia

Anemia is a condition in which the body lacks healthy red blood cells that help carry oxygen to other tissues in the body. Its causes include excessive bleeding or inadequate iron intake.

Unhealthy diet

Consuming nutrient-poor foods can also lead to menstrual fatigue. Therefore, it is necessary to follow a diet based on foods rich in iron, proteins, omega-3, magnesium and calcium, which have anti-inflammatory properties.

You sleep badly

Inadequate sleep can contribute to menstrual fatigue and increase the risk of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, stroke, obesity and depression. Although pain and mood swings can disrupt your sleep schedule, it’s important to try to nap as often as possible.
