Warning, spoilers! This article discusses the black dove conspiracy in detail. If you haven’t seen it and don’t want to know what it contains, read no further.
Released last Thursday, Black Doves immediately established itself as one of our favorite series of December. This Christmas thriller, with its stylish cast, London under the snow and its bloody plot, has everything to keep you entertained for six episodes.
Explosive finale
In the series finale, Helen Webb (Keira Knightley) discovers the truth about the death of her lover Jason (Andrew Codge). During a tense confrontation with Alex Clarke (Tracey Ullman), the head of the Clarke family, which runs the entire London underworld, Helen learns that it was Trent, Alex’s son, who arranged for Jason’s murder, as well as his friends Maggie and Philip. Trent tried to cover up manslaughter: the death of the Chinese ambassador after an argument because he was dating (and drugging) his daughter Kai-Ming.
With a gun pointed at Trent, Helen is ready to bring justice to Jason, but in the end it’s Sam (Ben Whishaw) who destroys Trent and Alex. “He does this out of love for Elena and to protect her from the gravity of this gesture.“- explains Joe Burton, creator of the series Tudum.
Consequences of choice
This decision is a turning point for Sam by killing Trent and Alex, he refuses to leave behind his past as a killer. Now he’s the target of the Clark family survivors, who we believe will be determined to seek revenge.
At the same time, Helen makes an equally important decision: she refuses to know more about Jason. Her boss at the Black Doves, Reid (played by Sarah Lancashire), gives her a USB drive containing information about Jason’s true role as an MI5 agent, but Helen throws it into the Thames. “He knows that he loved her and that is enough. Details are redundant“, Barton justifies.

Different forms of family
Despite the turmoil of the past few days, Helen and Wallace’s (Andrew Buchan) marriage remains intact, albeit fragile. The finale shows their family celebrating Christmas together, symbolizing Zawi’s secretive life. Burton explains:They accept each other in their imperfections and choose to stay together.“
One of the finale’s most unexpected arcs involves two hit women, Eleanor (Gabrielle Crews) and Williams (Ella Lily Hyland), as well as Kai-Ming (Isabella Wei), the daughter of the Chinese ambassador. After saving the Clarks, this unlikely trio creates “Surrogate family“And spend Christmas together.”I wanted to show that they had a good Christmas and these three are very funny“, Burton confides.

For the following characters
Sam and Lenny (Kathryn Hunter)—Sam’s former employer who blackmails him—end the season with obvious tension. Although Sam forgives Lenny in their final face-to-face, their relationship promises to be rocky. Burton reveals that the original version of the script called for Lennie to die, but his potential led to him being kept alive.
Between the sacrifices, mysteries, and incomplete resolutions, the Black Doves finale leaves viewers with as many questions as it answers, and clearly lays the groundwork for a possible season 2.
Black Doves is currently available on Netflix.
