Actress Freema Agyeman, known to fans of the series for “Doctor Who”, “Sense8” and who has played Dr. Helen Sharpe since the release of “Hospital New Amsterdam”, has announced that she will leave the medical series and will not participate in the fifth and final season.
The actress herself shared the news in a statement on Instagram.
“Dear Dam family. First of all, I would like to thank you very much for your endless, dedicated and delightfully fierce support!” Wrote Agieman. “I feel so blessed to have come into contact with so many of you over the past few years, as I was in Ms. Helen Sharpe’s shoes and was able to witness every ebb and flow of her emotional investment. “Hospital New Amsterdam” creator / showrunner David Schulner and executive producer Peter Horton released a joint statement in response to the post.

Season 4 concluded with Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) and Helen preparing their wedding, but a hurricane headed to Carolina changes course for New York. In the season finale, Max seems to be frantically texting Helen asking her if her flight was hijacked, with no response. Helen’s last word was a message to Max the next morning: “Today was … I have no words. I’ll call you soon.”
The new episodes will premiere on September 20 in the United States.
