Lula’s second head surgery in three days was successful, Kalil says

The new medical operation carried out on President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) on the morning of this Thursday the 12th, at the Sírio-Libanês Hospital, was considered “a success” by the team accompanying Lula. The operation was defined by the president’s doctors as complementary to the emergency head surgery he underwent two days ago.

The embolization of the meningeal artery, which began at 7.25 am and ended around 8 am, was described by the doctor Roberto Kalil as a sort of catheterization, with the aim of reducing the risk of new bleeding associated with subdural hematomas (localized between the brain and skull). The first surgery was performed to drain a hematoma caused by the president’s fall in October.

Kalil emphasized that the technique did not require general anesthesia. “The surgery was carried out under sedation. So much so that, shortly after the surgery, the president was already awake and speaking”, he specified. The team presented new clarifications in an interview in which the doctors José Guilherme Caldas (neuroradiologist), Rogério Tuma (neurologist), Marcos Stavale (neurosurgeon), Ana Helena Germoglio (infectious diseases specialist) and Kalil, cardiologist participated.

Marcos Stavale reported that the risk of new bleeding is statistically negligible. “He is neurologically perfect, he is very well, he speaks. Today was a procedure so as not to have to face in the future what happened on this last trip he made”, said the doctor referring to the episode of last Monday, the 9th.

According to Kalil, the drain that was placed in the president’s head during the first surgery was removed yesterday and he remains under observation.

Away from stress

The medical team explained that Lula, who is 79 years old, will remain in the same intensive care unit and that, starting today, the intensive monitoring equipment can be removed. “The recommendation is relative rest. Avoid any type of stress, which is practically impossible in his position,” Kalil stressed.

Doctor Rogério Tuma also explained that in the fall suffered by the president, he had bruises on both sides of his skull, one of which had been absorbed by the body. “The president is normal. He is very well and is capable of performing any act of civil life. The only thing is that there is a medical recommendation not to exert himself physically and mentally,” Tuma said.

Kalil added that the president reported no consequences from the brain hemorrhage or the medical procedures performed. “After discharge from the hospital, the president will be able to go to Brasilia, probably on Monday or Tuesday the 10th. I mean, it could be a day more or less, depending on the evolution, which has been very good. From the Palace, he will be able resume the shipping schedule without any issues,” Kalil said.

Visits

“What defines care in the president’s intensive care unit, as in any other patient, is continuous monitoring, which, for the layman, is those devices placed on the chest that show graphs on television,” he said. explained Dr. Ana Helena Germoglio. “Currently the president is being monitored. When we remove this continuous monitoring, it will indicate that he will no longer be in intensive care. However, in terms of physical space, he will continue in the same place where he is housed,” he said.

The doctors also specified that visits will remain prohibited during Lula’s hospitalization. Currently only family members can have contact with the president. First lady Rosangela da Silva, known as Janja, accompanies her husband to the hospital. “Visits will be prohibited until medical discharge,” Kalil said.

Janja posts an old photo and says the president is fine

In the publication, made on X (formerly Twitter), Janja said that Lula will soon be “home and fully recovered.” The first lady also specified that the medical team, which accompanies the PT member to the Sírio-Libanês Hospital in São Paulo, reassures her and updates her on the president’s state of health.
