Topless members of the Ukrainian feminist protest group Femen used chainsaws on a giant wooden sculpture outside the United Nations in Geneva on Friday, prompting police to intervene, according to witnesses.
The two women, wearing the Ukrainian flag as garter belts, shouted “Leave Russia out of the United Nations” and “F. Russia” as they sawed through the monument known as the Broken Chair, leaving more than a dozen cuts.
The three-legged structure, the work of Swiss artist Daniel Berset erected on the Place des Nations in 1997, has become a landmark in the city of Geneva. It is designed to raise awareness of the impact of landmines on civilians in conflict zones.
A Geneva police spokesperson confirmed that four people were questioned in connection with the incident.
Since it was founded in Kiev in 2008, the Femen movement has gained fame and notoriety in Europe for its protests – often topless – against sex tourism, homophobia and religious institutions.
