Arrested this Saturday morning, the 14th, reserve general Walter Souza Braga Netto, former Minister of Defense and former vice-presidential candidate of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), is identified by the Federal Police as a central figure in the coup attempt.
According to the investigation report, the so-called “coercive measures” foreseen by the Green and Yellow Punhal plan, which included operational planning for special forces actions, were to be presented to the general. The plan included, among other actions, the assassination of Lula and Alckmin, as well as the arrest of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF.
“The evidence obtained during the investigation demonstrates his concrete participation in acts related to the coup attempt and the abolition of the democratic rule of law, including the attempt to embarrass and hinder the present procedure,” the PF says.
The retired general is one of the most cited figures in the 884-page Operation Controcoup report, being mentioned 98 times. The operation led to the indictment of former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others accused of three crimes: attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état and criminal organization.
According to the report, “operational actions to comply with the coercive measures were planned in meetings that took place in the city of Brasilia, during November and December 2022. Braga Netto’s defense, however, claims that he “was not aware of any document relating to an alleged coup, nor of an intention to kill anyone”. Regarding today’s arrest, there has not yet been an official statement.
