Actress had her body criticized and was bothered by negative repercussions — to the point of considering ending her career on screen
After establishing herself as one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood in the first half of the 1990s, Demi Moore experienced a period of decline in the second part of the mentioned decade. Shortly after the turn of the century, the American came to think that her days in acting were numbered for a reason that was difficult to explain: a bikini scene.
In 2003, Demi was cast to play the villain of Charlie’s Angels – Detonating. At the time, she was around 40 years old and filmed a bikini scene alongside her colleague. Cameron Diazone of the protagonists of the film.
Even in good physical shape by the standards required of celebrities, Moore became the target of sexist and ageist criticism because of her body. In a recent interview with Interview Magazinethe artist reflected:
It’s interesting that I started to be (criticized) more when I reached 40 (years old). I recorded Charlie’s Angels and there were a lot of conversations about this bikini scene and it was all exaggerated, they talked too much about my appearance.”
She then admitted that, during that period, she considered putting an end to her career.

There was a moment, I have to say, when I started to wonder, ‘Is this what I’m supposed to be doing?’ Maybe this part of my life is complete. Not finished, but complete. That’s when I realized that if I was questioning myself, then I needed to inject more energy into being sure.”
Charlie’s Angels – Detonating it received only average reviews from critics and audiences. Despite this, it managed to gross US$259.9 million at the box office, against a budget of US$120 million.
Demi Moore “vulnerable” in new nude scene
The newest work by Demi Moore in cinemas is The Substance. In the film, she plays a fading actress who agrees to use an experimental drug to create a younger, better version of herself. However, you soon have to deal with the terrible side effects.
There is a scene in which the actress’ character and her younger version — played by Margaret Qualley — observe their naked bodies. In the promotion of the film during the Cannes Festival (via MovieWeb), Demi Moore revealed that he felt “vulnerable” during the moment, but had the support of his young colleague to record the scene.
I had someone who was a great partner and with whom I felt very safe. Obviously, we were very close – naked – and we also managed to have fun in those moments despite the absurdity of certain situations. But definitely, it’s just redirecting your communication and having mutual trust.”
The Substance was acclaimed during its screening at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024. It received a long ovation that, according to reports from those present, lasted between 9 and 13 minutes with standing ovation.
