The former midfielder is one of Corinthians’ greatest scorers and idols. Remember Neto’s career at Timão
One of the biggest idols in Corinthians history (as well as being an admitted Corinthians), former midfielder Neto will be honored by Timão. After all, the club will unveil a bronze bust of his face in Parque São Jorge, the club’s home ground. The ceremony will also take place this Saturday (14th).
In this way, Neto will be only the 13th Corinthians player to be immortalized by Corinthians. Thus, he will “follow in the footsteps” of Neco, Clúdio, Teleco, Baltazar, Luizinho, Sócrates, Rivelino, Ronaldão, Marcelinho Carioca, Wladimir, Zé Maria and Basílio.
Born in the hinterland of Sao Paulo, Neto is 58 years old and began his career in the youth teams of Ponte Preta and, later, Guarani. Indeed, José Ferreira Neto turned professional for the Campinas club. It also passed through Bangu (two trips), São Paulo and Palmeiras before arriving in Timão, in 1989.
The former midfielder, in fact, was the great driving force behind Corinthians in the 1990 Brazilian title. It is worth remembering that, until then, Timão had not won a national, continental or world title. He remained at San Paolo until 1993. Thus he also won the Brazilian Super Cup in ’91.
Neto also played for Millionarios (COL), Atlético-MG, Santos, Matsubara (JAP), Guarani and Araçatuba before returning to Corinthians in 1996. The following year, Neto then took over Paulistão and left Timão shortly after. Before finishing his career, he also played for Indaiatuba, Paulista Itália and Deportivo Itália (VEN).
In addition to his importance in the 1990 title and carrying the Corinthians name with him, Neto is also an idol for being Timão’s 25th best scorer, with 80 goals in 228 games. Neto, in fact, is currently the host of the Banda program “Os Donos da Bola”.
