Tonight on Netflix: Every ’90s kid grew up with this movie, but many have forgotten it three decades later

Matilda is not a little girl like others. Gifted with extraordinary intelligence and extraordinary powers, he spent his early years reading every page of the smallest book he could. Unfortunately for him, permanently engrossed in front of the TV, his parents are absolutely nothing like him. His father Harry, a used car dealer, and mother Zinnia, a gambler, have nothing but contempt for him.

On the day she returns to school, a happy occasion that finally allows her to escape from her family, Matilda is the happiest in the world. But his enthusiasm is dampened somewhat when he discovers the principal of his school: the despicable Agatha Legordin.

One of the best adaptations of Roald Dahl

If you are a fan of Roald Dahl and cinema, you should know that most of the works of the legendary British children’s author have been the result of very good adaptations for the big screen.

We can obviously cite various versions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (including Tim Burton’s with Johnny Depp), Steven Spielberg’s Good Big Giant or even James and the Giant Peach, stop-motion animated by master craftsman Henry Selick.

But if you grew up in the ’90s, maybe Matilda is where your heart belongs. Truly of its time (even in its now-dazzlingly dated special effects), this 1997 film sees Danny DeVito (who also plays the heroine’s father) manage to convey this tale unlike any other to great effect.

3393 stars out of 5

Gentle and magical, this adaptation of Matilda is all the more appealing because it knows how to recreate (and even sublimate) Roald Dahl’s characteristic humor on the screen.

With an average rating of 3,393 out of 5 stars by AlloCiné viewers, Danny DeVito is one of those little sparks of nostalgia that accompanied our first steps as moviegoers, and that we don’t mind rekindling years later. So if you’re looking for a little trip down memory lane tonight on Netflix, don’t hesitate to immerse yourself in Matilda’s fantastical adventure.
