Sam Mendes may be a chameleon director who tries a new genre in almost all of his films, but he remains a master in the field of war films: Jarhead – The End of Innocence and his award-winning 1917. Winner of three Oscars (out of eleven nominations), he proved he could reinvent himself in the genre by making two war films that couldn’t be more different.

The audience was immersed in the horrors of war with its daring sequential shots: a feat that gave us the impression of being in the middle of history. and where Jarhead What’s different is that it follows US Marines who have been waiting for something to happen in the Gulf War…for months! Between them, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx spend most of the movie under the hot desert sun doing nothing.

Acclaimed by critics, the film, rated 3.8 out of 5 by the press and 3.6 out of 5 by AlloCiné viewers, may not have been a huge success at the box office, but it has since earned letters of honor. And if the two films ultimately differ, they agree on one thing: they depict reality, whether it’s the pure action of World War I or the excruciating wait of the Gulf War.

But before Jarhead Has its own ending, at least three sequels saw the light of day…all released straight to DVD! Jarhead 2 (2014), Jarhead 3: The Siege (2016) and Jarhead 4: Law Of Return (2019) are thrilling and action-packed and ultimately have nothing to do with the film they were inspired by. And of course, without the actors we know… not very original and ultimately somewhat boring, they were overlooked and forgotten.

Too bad for the sequels to one of the best war movies of the last 20 years that don’t live up to the latter!

You’ll have to tune in to VOD to make up your own mind. The same goes for re-watching the original film, which is well worth checking out if you haven’t already!
