1992 on Netflix: Spanish thriller, at the top of the platform, inspired by a true story?

Warning, spoilers! This article details the plot of the 1992 series, if you haven’t seen it and don’t want to know what it’s about, don’t read on.

It has already reached number four on Netflix’s top series at the time of writing. The 1992 Spanish series tells the story of a serial killer who attacks – at gunpoint – people connected to the Seville World Expo that year. I told you more last week.

The series presents stories, some of which may seem realistic, so much so that you may wonder if it is based on a true story. Even so, it would clearly be tragic…

pure fiction

While some elements of 1992 may come from real life, the series is not based on a true story. Many aspects of the arsonist’s methods and motivations seem too exaggerated to be entirely believable.

However, the series manages to add many layers of realism when it comes to other characters in the series. 1992 makes them more human and believable about their lives beyond the central mystery and intrigue surrounding them. It should be noted that Amparo (Marian Alvarez) tries to find out the secret of her husband’s death with the help of Richie (Fernando Valdivielso).

Seville Expo 1992 and the Curro mascot is real

However, not everything came from the imagination of screenwriters Alex de la Iglesia and Jorge Guericaechevarria. The 1992 title refers to Expo 92 in Seville, the actual event that marked the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas after departing from the port of Seville.

And as shown in the series, the bull was the official mascot of the exhibition. It was a giant white bird with elephant legs and a rainbow colored beak. Unlike the expo depicted in the series, the real expo was a success and its pavilions were dismantled only after its completion.

And of course, no one died in the events surrounding the original exhibit, and no serial killer used the exhibit’s mascot as a mask to commit their crimes.

1992 is currently available on Netflix.
