In an interview with ‘LA Times’, the Brazilian actress talks about what it was like to play Eunice Paiva for the film
The actress Fernanda Torres was interviewed by Los Angeles Times this Tuesday, 17th, on his role as Eunice Paiva In I’m still herenew movie by Walter Salles. The film, which has become the highest-grossing post-pandemic film in Brazil, has been nominated for numerous international awards and is expected to be nominated for the Oscar for best international film.
“It was wonderful to discover the power of restrictions,” the Brazilian revealed to the North American newspaper. “Normally, as an actress, you want to show how much you can cry, scream or be funny. But this character doesn’t like to show off. She hides what she feels,” the actress said.
In the film, Fernanda Torres plays the mother of the writer Marcelo Rubens Paiva. The plot, based on the book of the same name, tells the true story of how the Paiva family dealt with the disappearance of their father, Rubens Paiva, during the military dictatorship. Throughout the film, Eunice must remain steadfast in the face of uncertainty about her future and that of her children.
“Imagine your husband was tortured, killed, chopped up, or thrown into the ocean. And you’re not allowed to sit, cry, or feel sorry for yourself. She had children and decided not to tell them what happened. How can you tell that to a child? He wanted to save their innocence, their faith in humanity.”
In recent months the Brazilian artist has participated in a long campaign to be nominated for the award for best leading actress. The performance was highly appreciated by critics around the world and Fernanda’s possibilities are considered realistic by the specialized press.
“She was always kind and had a smile on her face, but at the same time she was so intelligent, rational, persuasive, very feminine but powerful. And that mix of femininity, delicacy and strength was something I was trying to achieve,” said the Brazilian. “Enduring something that is impossible to face, moving forward, smiling, fighting, not falling apart, created such a powerful fire inside me, something I had never experienced before,” concluded the actress.
