The film is an adaptation of Freida McFadden’s psychological thriller

Lionsgate announced that The Housemaid (in Portuguese, The Maid)the film adaptation of Freida McFadden’s best-seller, will be released on December 25, 2025, in the United States (via Variety). The film is directed by Paul Feig (Maid of Honor Mission, A Small Favor) and has a script by Rebecca Sonnenshine. The cast includes prominent names such as Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, Anyone But You), Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia, The Dropout), Brandon Sklenar (It Ends With Us, 1923) and Michele Morrone (365 Days, Subservience).

There is still no official information about the debut in Brazil.

The film follows Millie (Sydney Sweeney), a young woman who seeks to restart her life as a maid in Nina’s house (Amanda Seyfried) and Andrew (Brandon Sklenar), a rich couple who appear to have a perfect life. However, Millie soon discovers that the family’s secrets are much darker and more dangerous than her own.

Production and expectations

Paul Feig directs and also produces the film alongside Todd Lieberman, Carly Kleinbart Elter and Laura Fischer. Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Freida McFadden and Alex Young serve as executive producers.

When the project was announced, Erin Westerman, co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, highlighted the perfect casting: “Part of the fun of the book was imagining the cast as we read, and Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried are perfect for Millie and Nina – both are mysterious, complex and incredibly skilled at bringing to life characters who don’t reveal everything right away.”

Westerman also praised the director: “We are excited to reunite them with Paul Feig, who we worked with on A Small Favor and its sequence. He has a proven track record in developing stories with dynamic female protagonists.”

Adam Fogelsonpresident of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, also celebrated the production: “A great filmmaker, an incredible cast and a script adapted from an excellent book is a great starting point. I previously worked with Paul and Amanda, and Sydney is incredibly talented and engaging.”
