OpenAI said Friday it is testing new AI models with reasoning capabilities, o3 and o3 mini, in a sign of growing competition in creating smarter models that can tackle complex problems.
The company’s CEO, Sam Altman, said the AI startup plans to launch o3 mini by the end of January and the full o3 after that, as large and more robust language models can outperform existing models and attract new investment and users.
Microsoft-backed OpenAI launched o1 AI models in September. The o1 models are capable of reasoning about complex tasks and can solve more challenging problems in the areas of science, coding and mathematics than previous models, the company said in a release.
OpenAI’s new o3 and o3 mini models, currently undergoing internal safety testing, will be more powerful than previously released o1 models, the company said.
