After three years of waiting, Squid Game fans will finally be able to discover the sequel to the South Korean series. First airing on the platform in late 2021, the first season was a surprise success, becoming the most-watched original program of all time on the streaming service within weeks.
Originally, there were no plans for a sequel to Squid Game. But the show’s popularity eventually convinced creator Hwang Dong-hyeok to write and direct additional seasons. Therefore, season 2 can be discovered on December 26 on Netflix, but with an unpleasant surprise for fans.
Shortened season 2, for good reasons
Although the first season consisted of a total of nine episodes, the second has only seven, but fans can be sure: this is a purely artistic decision decided by the creator of the series. The latter actually decided to shoot the 2nd and 3rd seasons of Squid Game at the same time.
Therefore, these two seasons were imagined as a continuation of one story. Therefore, this is the end of episode 7, which the South Korean director judged to be the best fit to celebrate a few months of hiatus. He justified this in the interview Digital spy :
“What I can tell you is that it will be good for you to take this short break and wait for the third season, because I can say with certainty that the wait will be worth it.” In particular, he said. Therefore, Hwang Dong-hyuk is waiting for the end of season 2 “get angry” Squid game fans.
However, they can take comfort in the idea that they won’t have to wait three years to find out the end of the program. Netflix has already announced that the third season, which will air next year, will be the last. However, spin-offs could see the light of day on the platform, as could the American remake helmed by David Fincher.
Season 2 of Squid Game premieres December 26th exclusively on Netflix.
