Shonka Ducure, ‘Elvis’ actress and singer, dies at 44

Shonka Ducure, who played Big Daddy Thornton in this year’s Elvis Presley film, was found dead in the bedroom of his Nashville home on Thursday, police said. He was 44 years old.

Nashville police said there were no signs of foul play. The specialist is waiting for the test results.

Ducuret, a Fisk University graduate and singer from Nashville, shared the apartment with her two young children, police said. One of the children found her unconscious and went to a neighbor’s apartment, who called 911 just before 9:30 am, police said.

The actor, who also shared the stage at Coachella this year with Doja Cat, majored in theater from Fisk and graduated from Trevecca Nazarene with a BA in education, WPLN-FM reported.

In an interview with the network last month, Ducure said he taught second grade for a while and then worked with inner-city youth through extracurricular and summer programs.
