Next year, the state is expected to equip itself with 30 toll collection portals on important roads such as Dutra, Rodoanel and Mogi-Bertioga
Highways crossing the state of Sao Paulo are expected to gain 30 new system points next year free flow toll collection. The installation of 21 points of the free-flow system in Greater São Paulo is planned in the 1st quarter. In the 2nd semester, seven more portals are expected to operate on the coastal access highways, and another two in the northern part of the Rodoanel Mario Covas.
The model is already operational on two sections of the SP-333, in Itápolis and Jaboticabal, and on the Southern Contour of the Tamoios Highwayrecently opened on the north coast. The beaches of this region – such as São Sebastião, Ubatuba and Ilhabela – are among the most sought after by tourists.
- Free flow works without booths or gates. The driver passes through a portal installed on the highway without reducing speed. A system of cameras and sensors reads the license plate and identifies the characteristics of the vehicle, automatically recording the amount to be paid.
- For users who have the TAG (barcode sticker) installed on board the vehicle, the fee will be automatically charged to the TAG operator’s invoice.
- For customers without a sticker, the system reads the license plate and issues a fee that can be paid within 30 days through the self-service channels offered by the dealership (you can check on each company’s website). There are also physical payment stations.
- Failure to pay is considered toll evasion, a serious infraction under the Brazilian Highway Code, with a fine of R$195.13, plus five points on your license.
A company from the same group, Ecopistas, installed a portal at km 31.5 of the Ayrton Senna motorway, in Arujá, in early 2022, but it is only working as a pilot project and there is no fee. The highway has a conventional toll.
In Tamoios, a free-flow portal covering the entire length of the southern curve, measuring 22.7 kilometers, came into operation in November. The highway has two other conventional toll booths, at km 16.1, in Jambeiro, and at km 59, in Paraibuna, but they operate with manual collection booths and automatic payment gates. There are no plans to operate any further free-flow portals on the motorway in 2025.
