Is it the thrill of speed? The expectations for every new Superman are the same, and they mostly revolve around the superhero’s costume and the scenes in which he cuts through the air. If the outfit is clearly visible in the trailer released this Thursday, December 19, we only have the right to take off in the images of the James Gunn film, which is expected in theaters on July 9, 2025.
Fortunately, the director (who is also overseeing the new DC Universe alongside producer Peter Safran) gave some hints about what to expect from these sequences to media who visited the Superman set this year. After admitting that he was “very difficult” In order to shoot in the sky, the director talked about his influences on this level.
“We got a lot of inspiration from similar movies Top Gun Maverick“he tells her Gizmodo. “A lot of our action scenes are shot with drones flying around Superman, the people around him, the engineer or whoever he’s fighting in the air. We did that in the studio. Today we have small and completely crazy drones that are used by the best pilots in the world.”

A tour of the set, during which James Gunn also explained why the film was no longer called Superman LegacyAs originally announced: “Although I think he still has that idea of legacy in him, we did what we call a ‘pre-death’ before shooting.”he explained ComicBook.com.
“We’re meeting with department heads and saying, ‘Let’s imagine this movie is a giant flop. That we’re going to realize when it comes out in two years that something went wrong. What are we doing today? Today, what we’re not talking about, but who’s going to screw things up?’ It allows everyone involved to have their say, whether it’s about the script, the casting, the lack of communication between departments.”
“And then I realized that the title was about going back, but the movie isn’t about that, it’s about looking forward. When you see the movie, you’ll understand why ‘Legacy’ was originally in the title, because it was about Clark and his legacy, but as a title, We’ve been looking in the rearview mirror too much.
James Gunn, along with his main cast (David Korenswet, Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult), gathered the press to show them the Superman trailer and discuss it with them. That did not prevent them from remembering the more or less recent past and immersing themselves in this notion of heritage.
AlloCiné: What’s the most unexpected thing you’ve learned playing Superman that you weren’t prepared for?
David Korenswet: The first thing that comes to mind is that playing Superman isn’t that exciting. You often have to be strapped to the wheels, with stuntmen holding your feet to get you in the right position . And the suit looks cooler than it actually is because I was literally cooking inside while it was hot.
But what got me thinking is that people ask me about dressing for the first time: when you have this incredible opportunity to create it from A to Z with an extraordinary department like we had, wear it. piece, with adjustments and other parts to be added later. For me, it was the first time that others saw me dressed up.
When I got into the costume on set, I saw other people who saw Superman in me. I didn’t feel like I was, but it was amazing to see it in the eyes of my partners or team members. Including when they first saw Superman fly. The best part was being with the kids when one of the team members brought them to the set. This is where we realize how important Superman is to so many people around the world.

Do you remember the first time you saw Superman? In a comic book, movie or animated series?
David Korenswet: I don’t 100% remember my first impression. But there’s this interesting thing about Superman: you have the feeling that you know what it is before you see it anywhere. You can show a Superman symbol to a child and whether they’ve seen the comic book or the movie, they know it’s Superman. Because it is superior to any iteration of it.
For me, I remember secretly watching episodes of Smallville after high school and seeing Superman Returns at the cinema: this was around the time I was coming of age, so I remember that version well. Since then, I’ve seen so many reruns and read so many things that it all blends together into one big arc in my mind.
Rachel Brosnahan: My first memory was obviously Christopher Reeve’s Superman. He was the Superman of my parents’ generation, they loved his movies, so he was Superman for me for a very long time. On the set I think I saw the costume a little later than other people, but I remember sneaking up behind David, who was in costume, without saying much and telling him “Damn, you’re Superman!” (laughs)
There were unforgettable moments. Sometimes when we least expect it, at the end of a long and mundane day, Superman comes out of the dressing room and we tell ourselves “It’s not… does anyone else see it?” (laughs) But for me it’s David, forever.
Nicholas Hoult: I’m thrilled that David is the Superman to be with. His world is so ingrained in our culture that I knew about Superman and Kryptonite and all that before I saw Superman. Smallville gave me a better understanding of this world and Michael He did a great job at Lex Luthor. It was a great first step into this world.
