Stellantis extends the closure of the Fiat 500e factory until January 20; Car production collapses in Italy
Reuters reported that Stellantis has extended the pause in production of its urban electric car, the Fiat 500e, for a few more weeks, until January 20, confirming the unions’ expectations. It’s an attempt to buy time.
Car assembly lines at Mirafiori, the historic northern Italian factory where the Fiat 500 is made, have been repeatedly halted this year, with workers temporarily laid off, due to low European demand for electric vehicles.
Stellantis also announced a longer production shutdown, until February 3, for the two low-volume Maserati sports car models also produced at Mirafiori.
Stellantis presented the Italian government with an optimistic plan last week to revitalize its production in Italy, but head of European operations Jean-Philippeprendito said its effects would not be felt until 2026.
According to Reuters, car production in Italy is expected to fall below 500,000 vehicles this year, a terrible number considering the 751,000 produced in 2023. It will be the lowest level of production since 1958.
