The Rio Grande do Sul Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPRS) will file an appeal to increase the sentence of three convicts for the qualified murder of a victim for political reasons in Arvorezinha, in Vale do Taquari. The Jury Tribunal took place from 11 to 13 December in Soledade, in the north of Rio Grande do Sul, because courage was lacking due to the fact that coercion and threats to witnesses and jurors were found during the trial.
The three defendants, two principals and one executor, received sentences of 14 years and six months in prison – two of them – and 16 years and six months in prison. The two acquitted defendants were reported by the MPRS as executors. The murder was committed with a firearm, for a trivial motive and an asset that made it difficult for the victim to defend himself. Speakers in the plenary were prosecutors Ana Maria Dal Moro Maito and Melissa Stein Scharnberg, of the District, and prosecutor Francisco Saldanha Lauenstein, appointed by the institution’s Jury Support Center (NAJ).
The crime occurred on May 27, 2021, in front of a bar in Arvorezinha. At that moment, three men arrived in a car and two of them – wearing masks – got out and started shooting at Rudinei Santos da Silva, 41. The victim was in front of the business and died on the spot. According to the MPRS complaint, Rudinei da Silva was an election campaign coordinator of a political party opposed to that of the principal. During the 2020 election period, several conflicts between politicians occurred, culminating in police complaints. The three convicted of murder remain in prison.
