It’s one of those momentous events and reunions everyone’s been waiting for: Danny Boyle and Alex Garland directed and written 28 years later, respectively, the sequel to the 2002 cult film 28 Days Later with Cillian Murphy. But if the sequel trailer released last week is anything to go by, the original film is nearly impossible to find in our area, even on DVD and Blu-ray!
scheduled for June 18, After 28 years is one of the most anticipated films of 2025. As CNews recalls, in 2007, the first sequel completed this story about a population infected with the “anger virus”: it was 28 weeks later, this time directed and co-written. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo – and the latter can currently be seen streaming on Disney+ as well as VOD on dedicated platforms everywhere!
After 28 years will pick up the story, as its title suggests, nearly 30 years after the Fury Virus escaped from a bioweapons lab. Although very strict restrictions were imposed, some found a way to survive among the infected. So the community of survivors took refuge on a small island, connected only to the mainland by a causeway, which was placed under high security. When one of the islanders is sent on a mission to the mainland, he discovers that not only the infected have mutated, but also other survivors, in a context that is both mysterious and terrifying…
the reason
Watch now After 28 days It’s not an easy task if you don’t already own its precious DVD or Blu-ray.
But if you’re looking for it on streaming or VOD platforms, if you want to rent it digitally just to catch up before the third installment comes out, good luck: finding the movie is impossible unless you’ve talked about a pirated version or found a used physical version to buy.
All hope is not lost
As CNews explains, there’s a reason for this notable absence: The broadcast rights used to belong to Searchlight Pictures, a studio now owned by Disney. However, today the rights are held by Sony, which is also responsible for production After 28 years. At this time, there is no agreement with platforms that will allow public viewing After 28 days online, but hope remains for its further release.
According to CNews, this release would convince the studio to make the film available again sometime in 2025 for rental and/or purchase. However, Sony has not confirmed this information as stated in the publication.
Hoping for some good news soon, 28 weeks later is available on Disney+.
