Squid Game on Netflix: Which Characters Are Back from Season 1?

After a three-year wait, Squid Game Season 2 is finally coming to Netflix. Fans of the South Korean series are already wondering what Machiavellian games this new burst of episodes has in store for them.

In a world like ours, people in debt are forced to participate in games inspired by childhood. Eliminated participants are killed in cold blood by pink-clad guards, whose faces are hidden behind masks.

Who wants to make billions?

Thus, the concept of these games allows only one out of 456 players to grab the jackpot of 45.6 billion won (about 30 million euros). As a result, most of the characters that appeared in the first season are dead and therefore will not appear in the new seven-episode season.

The main character of the series – and the winner of the games at the end of season 1 – Seong Gi-hoon is back in this season 2. Again, played by Lee Jung-jae, the latter intends to use his wealth for revenge. The organizers of SquidGame. So it’s a whole new version of the character that we’ll be discovering in these new episodes.

In an interview with Variety , the 52-year-old actor admitted that he had “less fun” with the darker side of his character while filming this season 2. However, this change in personality was a real challenge for him. It remains to be seen how fans will react to the evolution of Squid Game’s main character.

This undead character is alive and well

Seong Gi-Hun isn’t the only character from Season 1 to return. The trailers also revealed the presence of Hwang Joon-ho, a young police officer played by Wi Ha-joon. The latter was left for dead at the end of the first season, but was later shown to have survived his injuries.

The end of season 1 also gave us the opportunity to discover the masked man, the man from before, who is the leader of the soldiers in pink. In the role of Lee Byun-hoon, the latter is played by none other than Hwang In-ho – the older brother of a policeman and a former winner of the Squid game. The show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that this mysterious character will play a bigger role in seasons 2 and 3.

The nameless man also returned

Finally, a fourth character seen in the first season will also return. This is the Recruiter played by Gong Yoo. The latter appeared in several episodes and offered passers-by a game of ddakji for money. It looks like the second season will focus more on his personality as we don’t know anything about him, not even his name.

These are the four characters that will be returning for the new season of Squid Game. The presence of emblematic protagonists from season 1 in the form of flashbacks or nightmares is not excluded.

But this information was never confirmed, despite fan speculation. The production actually managed to film Seasons 2 and 3 of the show at the same time, while not leaking anything.

Season 2 of Squid Game premieres December 26th exclusively on Netflix.
