Two cases of young women who died due to cardiovascular episodes have recently had repercussions. Know the risk factors
Recently, two apparently healthy young women died from cardiovascular events, one in Ecuador and the other in Brazil. Ecuadorian Betsy Dayana Jaramillo Ramírez, 28, suddenly fell ill while doing squats in the gym. According to the Daily Mail, the woman suffered a serious heart attack. In Sao Paulo, the journalist and anti-racist activist Natália Romualdo suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest. She was taken to hospital, but did not survive.
So far, no underlying illnesses have been reported in any of the cases. Albert Sabin Hospital cardiologist Dr Ausonius Sawczuk explains that several causes can cause death in young people, especially congenital heart disease. This is the case, for example, of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, asymmetric cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia. To identify these conditions, the specialist recommends performing an echocardiogram or electrocardiogram (ECG).
The different cardiovascular episodes
Betsy suddenly fell ill while doing squats at the gym. The doctor explains that the episode is characterized by everything that deviates from the patient’s normality. “It is often transient and can often be perpetuated, if, for example, it is associated with a stroke,” he says. In any case it is essential to investigate the cause of the discomfort. In the Ecuadorian’s case, she had a severe heart attack, which is the cessation of blood flow to a certain area, organ or tissue – generally, the target is the heart.
In the case of Natália, the Brazilian journalist, the cause of death was cardiorespiratory arrest. The specialist says that this condition is the result of some event, such as a heart attack itself. It can also be the result of an arrhythmia, an electric shock, trauma or anything external. Metabolic changes can also cause the crash, such as medications or ingesting certain substances in inappropriate doses.
Is the cause in vaccines?
When episodes of this type occur with young, healthy people, it is common for the population to try to find explanations. The cardiologist warns, however, that it would be dishonest to link the facts to the adverse effects of vaccines. “To affirm that the cardiac event is due to the vaccine it is necessary to exclude all other possible events that could have caused arrhythmia or heart attack. So it is not so simple and easy to underline it”, he highlights.
Pay attention to your health
Women in certain age groups are more likely to suffer from cardiovascular episodes, the doctor points out. Especially younger and thinner women are subject to sudden discomfort due, for example, to the heat or the menstrual cycle. In these cases, they may have increased flow and experience pain, which can cause discomfort. Furthermore, some diseases could be more linked to the presence of the female gene. But as a rule, events such as a sudden illness should always be investigated, the professional emphasizes.
“This is why a preventive evaluation is so important for all patients. During childhood we go to the pediatrician, when we reach adulthood it is interesting to do a first consultation with a doctor and a cardiologist for a check-up. In this consultation ,we are already able to diagnose various diseases that can potentially cause arrhythmic, cardiac events, sudden death or sudden illness”, concludes the doctor.
