The motorcyclist was swept away by floods on Avenida Rebouças and properties were left without power during the storm; Enel says it is working to serve affected customers
The strong rains fell on the afternoon of this Wednesday 25th Saint Paulcaused disruption in the capital São Paulo, including flooding, river overflows, falling trees and properties having their electricity service cut off.
The Municipality’s Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE) even declared a state of alert for the entire capital and put the region of the subprefecture of Itaquera, in the east, on alert due to the overflowing of the Rio Verde, in Rua Cunha Porã. The alert and attention states ended at 7.15pm.
A motorcyclist was swept away by the flood on Avenida Rebouças, but, according to the Civil Protection, managed to escape. In the same location, user X (formerly Twitter) reported having suffered damage to his car during the rain.
“Today I was in Rebouças and I think it was the first time in my life that I went through a freak flood. A guy saw his motorbike go away in the current and I lost the bumper of my car in that rain. Open manhole, city in chaos (sic),” he reported.
According to the Civil Protection, the city recorded 11 impassable flooding points and five passable points, around 6.30pm. Among the most critical regions are the neighborhoods of Sé, in the centre; Avenidas do Estado and Pompeia (south and west areas respectively); the neighborhood of Pinheiros (west area) and Santo Amaro and Vila Mariana, in the southern region of the city.
Even with the decrease in rain intensity in the early evening, places like Avenida do Estado (southern area), the Max Feffer Tunnel and Rua Brigadeiro Haroldo Veloso (in Pinheiros), Rua Euclides Pacheco (Mooca), Avenida Santo Amaro (Santo Amaro ) and the Ayrton Senna Tunnel (Vila Mariana) were still impassable, according to the ECJ.
Among the highest indices accumulated at the automatic weather stations of the Climate Emergency Center are:
- Villa Mariana – 63.8 mm
- Self-CGE – 62.2 mm
- Jabaquara-50.0 mm
- Pines: 48.0 mm
- Santo Amaro – 39.2 mm
Firefighters reported that between 1pm and 6.40pm this Wednesday, they had to respond to eight calls about falling trees. There were no casualties in any of these accidents.
Properties without electricity were also reported Wednesday afternoon. In Sao Paulo, the number of homes left without electricity was around 34 thousand. Enel, the concessionaire responsible for the distribution service, says teams are working to serve affected customers.
According to the CGE, the formation of rain showers was favored by a combination of heat and humidity due to the entry of the sea breeze, in the city of Sao Paulo.
