In Season 2 of Squid Game, Lee Jung-jae returns as Seong Gi-hoon. Strongly marked by the events of the first season, his sole obsession is to track down and eliminate the organizers of the Squid Game. The latter originally created Squid Game as a feature film. After many rewrites over time, the project was finally realized as a nine-episode mini-series. A sequel was not planned, and therefore, from a blank page, the South Korean director had to imagine the rest of the series.
Three years later, not one, but two seasons are coming to Netflix! Season 2 is now available on the platform, while the third – billed as the final – will be available online next year. This time we promise: fans will no longer have to wait three years to discover the sequel to Squid Game!
Fewer episodes, but more fun!
In terms of bad news, keep in mind that Season 2 is only seven episodes long. By comparison, the first one had nine. However, this reduction is not an economic choice, but an artistic decision. Seasons 2 and 3 were created by Hwang Dong-hyeok as a continuous story, and he identified episode 7 as the most appropriate to mark the break between the two seasons.
It’s okay, this reduced number of episodes will not be felt. On the contrary, Episode 1 brings us back to the world of Squid Game immediately and with some efficiency. The story is fast-paced and doesn’t waste time on a re-introduction episode that wouldn’t be necessary.

Hollywood star casting
Lee Jung-jae’s international success could have gone to his head. The latter also took his first steps in Hollywood in the Star Wars series The Acolyte. For his return to Squid Game, the 52-year-old actor gives a very convincing performance, managing to convey the darkness of a character consumed by the spirit of revenge, but his features are still illuminated by his sunny personality.
His role as a leader in front of this new generation of “squid players” fits him like a glove. His dismayed look at the madness of players wanting to extend their games to increase their personal prize pool seems to be aimed at us. Satire is still present in Season 2, but the entertainment aspect is not sacrificed. On the contrary, the larger resources allocated to the series allow action scenes to follow each other and new, new games appear – but still just as bloody.

Despite some writing flaws, Season 2 of The Squid Game is an almost entirely enjoyable success.
