We finally know what trick neurons use to coordinate better: the secret was in fractals

Knowing how neurons coordinate has been one of the brain’s great mysteries

THE human brain It is the most complex organ we know. So much so that perhaps it is less what we know than what we don’t know. One of the biggest unknowns about how this works is like the billions of neurons that function in ours brain can coordinate in a network with trillions of connections.

Multiscale organization

A new study has revealed new details about how neurons are organized in the human brain to carry out their tasks in a coordinated way.

In an article for The Conversation, University of Sydney researcher and study co-author Brandon Robert Munn explains with an analogy the incredible way our brain cells work. “It’s a bit like working in a high-performance company,” he compares.

Munn is referring to the fact that neurons must maintain a balance between individual skills and teamwork. The question for the team was how the neurons achieve the right balance. It is worth remembering that our brain has its own backup.

40%-50%

The study of this “work balance” revealed that the neurons dedicated between 40% and 50% of their work to “individual tasks”, while the rest was allocated to “team work”.

One of the most surprising points of the study is that this organizational pattern is by no means exclusive to the human brain, but can be observed in very different species of the animal kingdom.
