Streaming Tonight: Rated 4.1 out of 5 This is Clint Eastwood’s most disturbing movie

After his 1992 Western triumph with Impitoyable, Clint Eastwood struck again the following year with A Perfect World! Directed by Kevin Costner, the film is undoubtedly one of the director’s greatest successes, offering a pure concentration of dramatic thriller.

History takes us back to 1963. We follow Butch Haynes and Terry Pugh, two thugs who have escaped from a prison in Huntsville, Texas. On the run, they kidnap a little boy, Philip. Along the way, the understanding between the two fugitives quickly becomes complicated; Butch is forced to kill his partner to prevent the child from being attacked.

Little by little, Butch and Philip bond strongly, in a relationship that becomes almost father and son. They come across one thing in particular: they both have one thing in common, they grew up without a father figure.

At the same time, a team of police officers consisting of Texas Ranger Red Garnett, criminal Sally Gerber, and FBI sniper Bobby Lee are on the chase. The police are convinced that the little boy is in mortal danger because they are holding this dangerous fugitive hostage.

Kevin Costner is touching like never before

In this role of a criminal with a big heart, Kevin Costner gives us an absolutely wonderful performance with a surprising tenderness. His duet with young actor TJ Lowther is truly poignant, enhanced by Clint Eastwood’s excellent direction. The latter plays Ranger Red Garnet with the boundless charisma that characterizes him.

Note that the film’s title, An Ideal World, is taken from a dialogue performed by Sally Gerber, one of FBI agents and criminologists, Laura Dern. In one scene, the agent proves it “In a perfect world, we could block every avenue to stop a fugitive”. Sally will then answer this “In a perfect world, we wouldn’t have refugees running away anyway.”

When it was released in 1993, Clint Eastwood’s film was a huge success, earning $135 million at the worldwide box office. In France it attracts more than 3.1 million viewers! The feature film available on the Max platform is perfect for a post-Christmas break session by yourself or with friends!
