Production accumulated 44.8 billion minutes of viewing
The film Moanareleased by Disney in 2016, was officially recognized as the most watched film on streaming in the last five years. According to data from Nielsen published by The Wall Street Journalthe animation was reproduced by 44.8 billion minutes between 2020 and 2024, surpassing other major hits on the Disney+ platform and other streaming services.
The feature film, which initially had a moderate reception in theaters, ranking 12th at the global box office in its year of release, found an even larger audience when it was made available on Disney+ in 2020. The plot takes place in ancient Polynesia and follows the young Moana, chosen to save her island from a curse.

In second place in the ranking of most watched films is Charmwith 37.1 billion minutes played in the same period. Frozen 2 appears in third position, accumulating 30.7 billion minutes.
Jared Bushcreative director of Walt Disney Animation Studios, highlighted the film’s unexpected impact: “For a film released so many years ago to suddenly become a success of this level is unprecedented”Bush commented to The Wall Street Journal.
In addition to Moanaseries like Baby Reindeer, A Whole Man and Bodkin (Netflix) led the list of most watched streaming productions last year.
Live-action and cast
The beloved 2016 animation, Moana: A Sea of Adventureis being transformed into a live-action film that will hit theaters in 2026. The story, which grossed more than 600 million dollars globally and yielded a sequel in 2024, follows Moana, a young woman from the island of Motunui, who embarks on a journey across the ocean to save his people.
The film will star Catherine Laga’aia17 years old, who will give life to the protagonist, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnsonwho returns to the role of Maui, the demigod he played in the original animation. The direction is Thomas Kailwith production of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Auli’i Cravalho and Johnson.
