In Gianluca Giodi’s The Flood, Guillaume Canet and Melanie Laurent play key figures in French history, Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette. The film focuses more specifically on a period less covered in cinema: the imprisonment of the royal family in the tower of the cathedral before their execution by guillotine in the Place de la Concorde in the space of several months.
On screen, the acting duo, especially Guillaume Canet, transform thanks to impressive make-up and costumes – Marie-Antoinette had more than ten layers of ink according to Laurent.
In theaters on December 25th, The Flood received a rather disappointing press average of 2.9 out of 5 on AlloCiné. Rating among viewers is higher than 3.1 out of 5*. To understand the strengths and weaknesses of this film, a quick review of some opinions.
What does society think?
“The conditions of the French king’s imprisonment were interestingGreets Pierre, who emphasizes the quality of the actors’ interpretations: Guillaume Canet was an excellent Louis XVI, Melanie Laurent was also excellent as Marie-Antoinette.Same thought Christoph R.:Excellent acting, direction and music give a very realistic rendering of this end of the reign.”
“The revolutionary climate is perfectly conveyed and the royal family is not a caricature. The Flood is one of the very good films about the French Revolution“, judge Pierre-Alexis G.. In turn, Cinemadourg characterizes: “If everything is interesting and informative, it still lacks the epic breath to fully captivate.“
Norbert F. Regrets the pace of the film: “slow movie. It’s boring, we almost fall asleep. The worst Louis XVI movie I’ve ever seen. For his part, Louis-Philippe de la Rochefoucauld notes the film’s historical inaccuracy: the work suffers from an accumulation of biblical liberties that border on irreverence. (…) The film seems to come more from fiction than from the rigorous work of a filmmaker-historian.”
“If this type of scenario is an opportunity to slightly revisit big moments in history, viewers certainly shouldn’t take everything at face value.Supports PLR. While there is always food for thought, time permitting, there is little emotion in the words.“
at the end
the flood is a historical film that will fascinate the curious audience who wants to admire the quality of costumes, sets and the physical transformation of the acting duo. Be careful though, a feature film remains a work of fiction and takes some liberties with reality – something the film states in its intro.
