Denis Villeneuve criticized the use of the device during filming
Cell phones were banned on the movie set. Dune.
Dennis Villeneuvedirector of the film, explained that he made the decision in an interview with Los Angeles Times published on Thursday, 26 (via People). “Cinema is an act of presence”, he explained. “When a painter paints, he has to be totally focused on the color he is putting on the canvas.”
He continued, “It’s the same thing with the dancer when he makes a gesture. With a filmmaker, you have to do it with a team, and everyone has to focus and be fully present, listening to each other, being in a relationship with the other.”

“So, cell phones are also banned on my film set, from day one. It’s banned. When you say ‘Cut’, you don’t want anyone going to your cell phone to check your Facebook account,” he added.
In the same interview, Villeneuve opinion on other technologies: “I feel like humans are governed by algorithms now. We behave like Artificial Intelligence circuits. The ways we see the world are binary. We are disconnecting from each other, and society is shaking in some ways . It’s scary.”

At the time, the filmmaker also stated that he would like to have a “strong script” for Dune: Part 3 and I didn’t want to run the risk of doing something that wasn’t really ready due to enthusiasm.
