The disaster occurred between the cities of Aguiarnópolis (TO) and Estreito (MA). At the time of the collapse, 10 vehicles were traveling along the 120 meter long collapsed section, about the maximum size of a football field. The crash involved four trucks, three cars and three motorcycles, for a total of at least 18 people directly involved.

Rescue teams, including firefighters from the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Pará and the Navy, carry out searches up to 30 meters deep. 11 deaths have been confirmed so far.

Among the missing there are people of different ages, including Felipe Giuvannucci Ribeiro, just 10 years old, and Cecília Tavares Rodrigues, 3 years old.

“This bridge took a piece away from me,” Maria Deusilene said in an interview with Fantástico. She is the sister of Gesimar Ferreira, 38 years old, victim of the accident.

Neglect

The collapse of the Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge was not a surprise to those familiar with its condition. A report from the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), from January 2020, had already highlighted cracks in the columns and exposed and rusting steel cables. A tender for the repairs was opened in May 2024, but the winning company was deemed unfit for the work.

Now families and experts are asking for explanations. In the meantime the section remains closed.
