Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros. (in live action and animation), Resident Evil (the same), Silent Hill, Tomb Raider or even Sonic, whose third cinematic adventure has just been released in our cinemas. Video game film adaptations have been legion since the 90s, but do they still make good movies?
Very rarely, so much so that for a long time it was an impossible mission, while games at the same time knew how to capture the cinematic language as almost interactive films. There are notable exceptions though, including one that managed to average a 4.1 rating on AlloCiné, and you might be hard-pressed to guess its title without looking down a bit.
Released in theaters in 2016, Dofus (or Dofus – Book 1: Julith) is the highest-rated video game-to-film adaptation on AlloCiné. Before Super Mario Bros. 2023, its a good average of 4 out of 5. The first feature film from Ankama Studios, which we also owe to Mutafukazi, it is inspired by the self-titled 2004 release.
An MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game), which was then the online game with the largest number of players in France, in which players must find six primordial dofus, dragon eggs that grant great power to their bearer. Scattered in the four corners of the open world, where they can develop as they wish.
The plot of the feature film takes place two centuries before the events of the video game.
Some excerpts from reviews by Internet users who gave Dofuss a 5 out of 5
Coca-In: “A true gem from Ankama Studios. I couldn’t have dreamed of anything better than their first film. Action, tears, love, but above all a good dose of humor!! To see and re-watch!! Without moderation!”
Anonymous internet user: “An event in animation that will be a landmark: after the first 10 minutes of surprise, we are transported into a world, both benevolent and strange, that without any artistic or intellectual pretensions, takes us with “two bullets”. Travel, without pretense, in an epic dream, at the same time invigorating and gentle, for 2 hours. We reconciled watching the 8-year-old and 35-year-old geeks in the back of the room suddenly realized that. The entertainment world has just changed, we’re all in this together and that’s all we’re asking for!”
Syl D: “First of all, I don’t know about the world of Dofuss. On the other hand, I’ve heard a lot about Ankama and their work, and to be honest, this movie deserves the maximum score because it’s the best French animated movie. I saw everything aesthetically, the soundtrack is good, the voices too. “
The script is clear and even if there are no big surprises, it is worthy of attention. I can only see 2 minor flaws: the molestation story and missing certain endings to scenes (one in particular that went a bit off. The rhythm at the beginning of the movie) but otherwise it’s great and you can be sure I’ll be there for book 2.”
Comedy, burlesque, action and emotion intermingle in a delicious adventure story
Roman D.: “It’s French, it’s very well done, it’s dynamic, it’s beautiful, it’s open to everyone… and just to encourage this kind of animated production, I really recommend you go on a trip to the theaters!”
Anonymous internet user: “This is why French cinema is immersive! A brilliant moment! Take your children there, who will find beautiful values that make them dream, take adults who still love beautiful stories, and also take adults who no longer dream just for the sake of it. Awaken their artistic sense or Just to discover a new world (…) This mural is a rare work that I hope will find a community and not just “her” The society we put in a cartoon box.

Julien L. : “Whether you know the world or not, it’s not a problem to get into the story and have a good time with your family. Because, yes, this is an animated film that you can enjoy as a family, thanks to the double language that an adult has. And a child interprets it differently. Personally, I went through all the emotions stage and so far only films. Miyazaki Studios Ghibli can have that effect on me.”
Arno S.: “Ankama once again asserts itself as one of the greatest feature films of our time, creating a true gem that unfolds again and again with comedy, action and emotion in an adventure story driven by engaging characters and a controlled rhythm.”
“Stunning visual beauty, backed by a very beautiful orchestral score, this unique little gem deserves your full attention. Bravo Ankama, Bravo.”
