‘The invisible agent’: why Chris Evans wanted to play the villain?

“This was definitely a swing I’ve never taken before.”

We’ve seen actor Chris Evans play a bit of a goofy guy recently in ‘Daggers in the Back’, but in ‘The Invisible Agent’ he takes it to another level.

In the new Netflix movie directed by Avengers duo Anthony and Joe Russo, Evans, who is reunited with the filmmakers, plays Lloyd Hansen, a psychopathic former CIA agent who is tasked with hunting down the Sierra Six, role played by Ryan Gosling, and will do anything, and kill anyone, to achieve his goal.

Speaking with Digital Spy ahead of the film’s Netflix premiere on Friday, Anthony Russo explained why exactly Evans decided to do a 180-degree turn from his heroic role as Captain America with them. This is what the director said

“The character of Captain America is a very controlled character, a very low-key character. And Chris Evans has a really vibrant personality in his natural life. In his real life, he’s very funny and very smart”

He was a character who was so opposite. I mean, that was really the appeal of him. It was just discovering something new and exciting for Chris to do. Because he’s been so successful, he’s really in a place, he told us, where he just wants to take risks and challenge himself. And this was certainly a blow that he had never taken before.“, he acknowledged.

In addition to seeing Evans play a full-blown psychopath, ‘The Invisible Agent’ also marks Ryan Gosling’s first movie role in four years. It’s also the first action movie for the ‘La La Land’ actor, something Joe Russo added was part of his appeal. “I think I was ready for it. It was kind of a turning point for him, where he wanted to do something bigger and he was ready to do something bigger. But it also, you know, encapsulates all aspects of the character. what do you need“, he explained.

He has a very dry sense of humor. It is fun. But you believe him physically in the role, and he is a sublime actor. The character has big stretches of the movie where he doesn’t speak. So you have to communicate a rich inner life without saying much, and very few people are as good as Ryan at doing that.“.

An attitude that differs a lot from what is expected of the actor in Greta Gerwig’s new film, where Gosling is Barbie’s partner, Ken. Evans will be seen soon in ‘Ghosted’, where he works with Weapons as in this film and in ‘Puñales’, as well as being in the remake of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’.

‘The invisible agent’ arrives on Netflix this July 22.
