When Prime Video announced the launch of a new Blade Runner-derived series two years ago, we expected the platform to take time to develop the project. Today we learned that Filming has just finished After 6 long months and teams from 2025 will be able to move into the post-production phase.
A direct sequel to Blade Runner 2049, Blade Runner 2099 takes place 50 years after the events. The series takes us to Los Angeles in the year 2099 and follows the character of Cora.
With the latter on the run for the rest of his life, Chameleon was forced to assume multiple identities. To ensure a stable future for her brother, she takes on one ultimate identity and is forced to team up with Olwen, a Blade Runner facing the end of her life. The two are embroiled in an ever-expanding conspiracy that poses an existential threat to a city struggling to revive itself.
One of the most anticipated series of Prime Video
To carry out this ambitious program, Amazon has relied on quality actors, the budget of which has not yet been revealed. Euphoria-discovered Hunter Shaffer will perform against the unstoppable Michelle Yeoh.
The 62-year-old Malaysian actor is busy with projects and filming, as he will soon star in another sci-fi saga – Star Trek Section 31 on Paramount+ – and the sequel to the hit musical Wicked in late 2025.
While the 2025 date was once announced, we don’t yet know when Blade Runner 2099 will be offered to Prime Video subscribers. And, of course, you’ll need to count on quite a long post-production…
But the teams — notably executive producer Ridley Scott and showrunner Silka Louise (Halo) — let us feel pretty confident about the end result. In a press release last June, Amazon Studios co-president Vernon Sanders explained that the sequel would remain faithful to “The Intelligence, Themes, and Soul of Films.”
