After three years of waiting and wanting to satisfy fans around the world, Squid Game Season 2 had no room for error. He pushed the physical and mental limits of his teams, and one scene in particular proved particularly trying: the six-legged pentathlon in Episode 4.
Conceived by creator Hwang Dong-hyuk in the spirit of cooperation, this challenging event combines six mini-games with all participants bound by their ankles.
Organization was not the only problem:The scene took place on an indoor set covered in gravel, which created a lot of dust during each race.” Hwang told The Wrap. According to Front Man’s Lee Byung-hun, “Every turn threw up so much dust that breathing became almost impossible. As soon as the director shouted “cut”, everyone coughed.”
Titanic’s technical and human challenges
With 360 actors and 150 crew members on one set, the logistics of this scene proved monumental. Hwang admitted that “This series took more than two weeks to shoot.” Between the reshoots necessary to coordinate the action and the unforeseen adjustments to the shooting conditions, the challenge was significant.
Gravel, chosen for a visual effect reminiscent of playgrounds, ultimately made the atmosphere breathless. “Everyone got sick. I couldn’t escape the cough either” confides Hwang. This difficult environment made everyone tired: “It was the most fun scene, but also the most exhausting“, admits Lee Byun-hun.
Despite these challenges, Episode 4 captures the ambition of Squid Game Season 2. Hwang explains that this scene symbolizes “The importance of supporting each other, even in difficult situations.“
Squid Game Season 2 is currently available on Netflix.
