The new digital platform speeds up applications for people wanting to work, study or reunite with family in the country and is available to applicants from around the world. Germany has launched a new digital platform for visa applicants. The new portal was presented in a press release by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock as “a true administrative revolution”.
The website, available here, aims to facilitate access to the necessary documents for those who wish to work, study or join their family in Germany.
Applicants can choose from 28 national visa categories. Among these are the Chancenkarte, which allows workers from foreign countries with professional qualifications to enter the country to look for work, and family reunification, to facilitate the entry into the country of a person married to a German citizen to reunite with their spouse.
It is also possible to request Blau Karte in advance, specifically for IT professionals.
The new portal is available from 1 January 2025 in all 167 German visa offices worldwide. In practice, it advances the process of analyzing people eligible to request entry into the country and promises to speed up the request, but does not replace in-person visits when necessary.
Review of the visa process
Annalena Baerbock praised the new system, saying the reform was “long overdue”.
“Every year Germany has a deficit of at least 400,000 skilled workers,” Baerbock said.
“In times like these we cannot afford to simply let the best go [imigrantes] who come here to roll up their sleeves due to long application forms and even longer waiting times,” he added.
Baerbock stressed that Germany, as an immigration country, requires “a national visa process that is cutting-edge: modern, digital and secure.”
